Walk into any supplier catalog and you’ll see commercial hair dryers labeled 1200W, 1500W, 1800W, even 2200W+. More watts usually means more money — but does it mean better drying? We measured the three most common tiers head-to-head. Here’s what we found.
What Wattage Actually Does
Wattage is the energy the dryer can pull from the wall. In practical terms, it controls two things:
- Air temperature (peak 60–80°C at the nozzle)
- Air volume and speed (cubic meters per minute, plus m/s at the nozzle)
Higher wattage doesn’t necessarily mean hotter air. A well-designed 1200W dryer can blow more air than a poorly designed 1800W one. Wattage is the *budget* the motor has to work with.
The Test Setup
We tested three dryers from the Wiyi commercial line on the same 25 cm hair sample, room temperature 22°C, humidity 50%:

What the Numbers Mean
1200W (the H-729AR class): Slower drying, but noticeably quieter and cheaper to run. The right pick for hotel guest bathrooms where guests typically have 5–10 minutes and noise travels to adjacent rooms.
1650W–1800W: Faster drying, ideal for gyms, salons, and high-traffic back-of-house. Wiyi’s F-899 hand dryer sits in this tier and is a workhorse for facilities drying 200+ hands a day.
2200W+: Reserved for very long or very thick hair, or for salons that promise a 60-second blowout. Higher energy cost, higher breaker load, and almost always requires a dedicated 16A circuit.
The Energy Cost Trap
That 350 kWh gap between 1200W and 1800W over a year is about €70 in electricity (at €0.20/kWh, EU industrial average). For a 100-room hotel, that’s €7,000 a year. The €15 saved per unit on a 1200W model pays for itself in roughly 4 months.
